This morning I fell into a deep pit that I didn’t know how to get out of. Old stories were repeating, and making music out of it (no matter how awesome it sounded) was making me feel worse. I just felt really, really depressed.
At one point Kasey Musgraves’ song “Rainbow” wandered into my mind, and I pondered the message. What was there to be depressed about, really? The thing I was struggling with didn’t deserve to rule my day or determine my worth or happiness.
I was thinking through what to do. It seemed like a good time to just work on a new macrame piece. I wanted to try a rainbow design that Mary Maker Studio posted a tutorial of on Instagram. My new yarn had arrived and so I now had a wide color palette to choose from. After working through several project ideas in my mind, I finally settled on a rainbow using my favorite colors.
After eating, nursing the baby (love the oxytocin vibes), and “Rainbow” playing through my head, my dark mood vanished as I set right out to creating.
I listened to Kasey Musgraves’ beautiful Grammy winning album Golden Hour as I made my knots and the entire mood and project just blended together. I was reminded again how wonderful life really is. Sometimes it can be so hard to recognize when our soul feels in battle with itself or the outside world.

I picked my favorite colors of pinks and greens and blues and added shiny silver and gold. I fell into the familiar meditative rhythm of making square and clove hitch knots, and I let myself feel ok… and happy.

Tie up the boat
take off your coat
and take a look around
Everything is alright now
‘Cause the sky is finally open
the rain and wind stopped blowin’
But you’re stuck out in the same old storm again
Let go of your umbrella
Darlin’ I’m just tryin’ to tell ya
That there’s always been a rainbow hangin’ over your head-“Rainbow”, Kasey Musgraves
It happened to be a very cloudy wet morning. As soon as I finished my rainbow, the clouds suddenly broke up and the sun was shining outside my window once more. It felt like a wonderful present just for me š
